Fast, Accurate and Efficient:

Automated Data Collection Delivers On All Fronts

Whether it is bar coding or RFID, data collection solutions have proven an accurate and efficient approach to track the movement and location of materials, equipment and people. It is unlikely a day goes by that we don’t benefit from automated data collection (AIDC). Tracking the shipment status of that rare find on eBay or driving through a tollbooth without having to scrounge for "exact change" are made possible through innovative application of these technologies. Without AIDC, the cost to deliver such services would be prohibitive, if even feasible.

Uses of AIDC go beyond the work-in-process and shipment-tracking applications we are most familiar with. The US-Canada NEXUS program is an alternate border crossing inspection that allows low-risk Canadian and US citizens and non-permanent residents to travel across the border with minimal delay. NEXUS identification cards are being embedded with computer chips and an RFID antenna—reducing inspection time to approximately 5 seconds per vehicle without any compromise in security.

Dole Food Company was able to quickly respond to a potential food safety issue through use of RFID to track produce from the farm field through the processing plant and ultimately store delivery. Dole was able to pinpoint at-risk product and current locations. The accuracy and real time nature of the tracking system facilitated immediate action—preventing any known illnesses and avoiding pulling unaffected product from store shelves.

Maricopa County in Arizona is using wireless data collection technology to manage asset inventory in the Public Works Department, saving taxpayers thousands of dollars annually and improving overall service delivery.

Kimberly-Clark, makers of Kleenex and Scott Tissue and a top Wal-Mart supplier are an early RFID adopter and proponent. Kimberly-Clark has implemented RFID to not only meet Wal-Mart mandates but uses the technology to ensure retail displays are on the sales floor in time for planned promotions and advertising. Promotion execution has improved almost 50% and there has been a similar increase in sales.

These a just a few examples of how bar code and RFID applications can help organizations tackle critical challenges and proof that AIDC can deliver results quickly, accurately and at the same time lower costs or increase revenue.
